La Voiture Noir by Isabel De Los Rios. It's a new translation of a French book which has already been translated to English and is available in the US. De Los Rios says that her goal is to create a book that is “an homage to the great French literature, but still as contemporary as possible.”
The main character of this book is Vincent, a writer whose wife died unexpectedly. This is something which happens very often in his life, but it leaves him with a great deal of guilt. He wants to write a novel, so that he can get rid of all the guilt, but has no idea where to start. So he decides to travel abroad, in order to find inspiration.
The trip he takes doesn't need much inspiration, because all he needs is himself. What he ends up doing, instead, is looking through the pages of other writers, trying to figure out how their work was created. When he finally gets around to reading what he wants to write, it is the result of months of hard work. He realizes that he needs to change his approach to writing. This is where De Los Rios's writing style shines through. It's more focused than other translations, which tend to be more “dumbing down” of what they're trying to translate.
La Voiture Noir is a book that will appeal to both the serious reader and the more casual reader alike. It's not afraid to have it take its readers on a journey, making them think about things. This is what's great about the way this book is written – the story is well-developed but also kept simple enough for the readers to enjoy. It's one of those books that has great characters, but also interesting things happening throughout the book. This is a great combination, which is rare to find.
The main problem with the translation of La Voiture Noir is the fact that it's a little bit difficult to understand for the non-native speaker. Fortunately, I know a few people who are familiar with it and they were quite easy to understand. De Los Rios did a great job of explaining things to me, and I felt as though I understood her book pretty well. but there are some parts that are a little hard to decipher.
Overall, De Los Rios did a good job translating La Voiture Noir into English. I'm glad she decided to translate it so many others will have the chance to read it, too.
