In the new Camaro movie directed by James Mangold, we see the iconic Camaro once again in the hands of the famous supercar racer, Rusty, played by Dolph Lundgren. Rusty is one of the best race car drivers in America and when he first enters the movie, we see him in his Camaro SS that is also modeled after the original. The movie's story takes place in 1970s Los Angeles where the supercar driver and his team are competing with the famous racecar driver of the same name.
Rusty races his Camaro SS against John Tutturro, a very fast and aggressive young driver who is an enigma to Rusty. The young driver drives his Camaro SS on street tracks with the local street racing circuit and Rusty and his team is defeated. This event upsets the team and they decide to get back at Rusty. The Camaro team builds a very powerful turbocharged V-8 engine to compete with Rusty. Rusty does have some sort of handicap, so his team has to work on it before the race.
After winning the first race against Rusty's Camaro, John Tutturro is impressed with Rusty's new design. John then starts working with Rusty on a plan to beat Rusty at his own race track. John and Rusty develop a rivalry and it gets serious as Rusty makes John promise to give his car, the “Stang”, to John for winning. In order to win the race, the team of Rusty, Tutturro, and the young driver to have to work together.
With the help of a well-liked racer from Hollywood, John Tutturro, the crew of Rusty must find a way to speed up their Camaro SS to catch up to the top of the race. They use a drag race car to get a high gas mileage but the cars need to be designed to make it run at high speeds in order to get faster. After getting the car ready, they find a secret formula that allows them to increase the power and speed of the vehicle.
The drag race car can run at speeds of over 150 mph but it needs to be designed to run at low speeds while it was in its race track. In order to get the vehicle to handle well, it is important that the Camaro team make use of every part of the racing car. It needs to be well-balanced and the car needs to have good aerodynamics, too.
As they enter the race track, they find out that they must not only have a drag race car to win, but they need to have a powerful turbocharged V-8 engine as well. The Turbo engine helps to increase the horsepower of the car as well as the horsepower of the turbocharger and the nitrous system, which help the supercar go even faster. They find a great place to race the drag race car and use it as an alternative to the race track, since the track is already full. The drag race team then uses the nitrous to turn the Camaro into an unstoppable car that can do a quarter mile in less than three seconds.
Dringlund and Tutturro are then able to complete the first pass for the first win in a decade to Rusty and his team. After the victory, they take the Camaro back to the track to challenge Rusty in a second race where they plan to beat him.
Rusty is surprised that he was beaten but in the film, we see how much the team has improved. They now have much more power than before and Dringlund and his team now have a drag race car that can go a long way and the Camaro now has a turbocharger and nitrous system. That night, they are able to get the Camaro to the end of the race where they get a third-place finish. At the end of the film, Dringlund and Tutturro are proud and happy that they were able to help Rusty win the race.
