Old Mercedes has been popular for years for their high quality of build and longevity, which means that they are a good option for anyone looking for either a weekend cruiser or a long daily driver. The same as with any other car manufacturer, however, there are certain general pros and cons of owning an older Mercedes which should be known before making the leap.
First of all, a new car is going to have a bigger price tag than one that's in 'rusty condition', meaning that even if you are only interested in buying a used car you are still going to need to have plenty of money in your pocket. Of course, you don't have to spend thousands of pounds just to get a well-built, reliable used car; there's always a second hand market where you can find a nice used car for a fraction of its retail value. But if you're serious about owning a new car then it's best to go with an older model rather than the new ones that cost more.
Next, if you want to avoid being tempted by an older car that's just about as reliable as the next, then there are a few things to consider first. While the engines are generally very powerful and you won't have to worry about anything else going wrong, the reliability of the transmission is much more important and there will be less than perfect transmissions out there. You may end up spending a lot of money on your new car but you could end up spending thousands if you make an error in your new car's transmission.
Also, if you are going to buy a used car, you should probably wait until it has a few thousand miles on it instead of buying the new car right off the showroom floor. Mercedes' engines are generally not very robust, which means that while the new car may run smoothly initially, it may well break down after a few years of driving. As such, before buying a used car, you should have a realistic expectation of what you'll need from the car.
A final consideration is that it might take a while for you to get used to driving the car. While the new car may look like a dream, and feel as though it's the ultimate in luxury, driving it is a whole different experience. It's not just about handling the steering wheel and feeling at ease, but about having the confidence to let go at the slightest sign of stress or anxiety. Even if it is a new car, you'll probably have to spend a few hundred or thousand miles driving it before you really get to know it, so it's best to go for something that's comfortable right from the get-go.
However, if you want a new car that will give you the peace of mind and the confidence to drive around safely and comfortably every day for years on end, an older Mercedes will probably be the way to go. It's a good option for someone who wants to own a vehicle that is reliable but doesn't want to invest a fortune in it.
